The top 5 shows on Netflix right now

Written by Paul Abbott. An English producer and screenwriter

When I say he hit the mark on this show of 9 seasons (as of November 2019), I am not exaggerating. Shameless is the story of a family living on the south side of Chicago. The oldest sister of 5, Fiona Gallagher (Emmy Rossum) struggles to care for her younger siblings. After her alcoholic father Frank (William H. Macy) occasionally pops in to stir the pot and leave for a few days.. or weeks.. or months. In earlier seasons Fiona dates Jimmy or.. Steve (Justin Chatwin). Whatever you want to call him. He appears less in later seasons and eventually not at all. Lip aka Phillip (Jeremy Allen White) is the eldest brother. He causes some trouble and falls in love with all of the wrong ladies. Ian (Cameron Monaghan) is the second eldest brother who, in earlier seasons, struggled with his sexual identity. As time progresses he begins to love himself and Mickey who we won’t get into right now. Carl (Ethan Cutkosky) is the second youngest. A prepubescent and confused boy who eventually hits puberty and starts to become his own person. Then there is south sides sweet heart, Debbie (Emma Kenney). Your heart becomes attached to the young and innocent girl as she grows into her teens and struggles with all of the typical young girl boy, period, and puberty problems. Lastly, there is the youngest of the siblings, Liam (Christian Isaiah). Liam changes actors as he ages, but they are both adorable and play the role well. Shameless has held my heart for years now. Its constantly on repeat. Unless I am on a plane with no headphones. Then, it’s on silent. Shameless is also featured on Hulu & Showtime.

My heart goes out to them for creating such a light hearted show where nobody has to die and there is only the occasional heartbreak. Jessica Day aka Jess is the main character and rightfully so. You may remember Zooey Deschanel (Jess) from the hit Christmas movie Elf as the character Jovie, Bridge to Terabithia, and Failure to Launch + many more. Jess and her roommates live in a loft in Los Angeles where they become very, very close. Winston (Lamorne Morris) bounces between jobs until he lands his dream job at the LAPD. Nick (Jake Johnson) is a bartender at a local bar. He barely knows how to mix drinks and is probably already drunk. Schmidt (Max Greenfield) is working his way up at a marketing firm that is run mostly by women, and, he loves it. Well, kind of. Coach (Damon Wayans Jr.) is in and out of the New Girl scene. He shows up a little out of nowhere and stays for a while. To eventually move on with his life and move away. Cece (Hannah Simone) is Jess’ childhood best friend. She doesn’t live in the loft, but is very present in the show. New Girl will always be on repeat in my house. Whether I am cooking, cleaning, or looking for a good laugh.. New Girl is my go to.

Created by Jenji Kohan and based on the true life events of Piper Kerman

A woman who spent a year in a women’s minimal security prison. Piper Chapman (Taylor Schilling) is the main character and is the actor that gets the ball rolling. Chapman received a sentence of 15 months in prison for transporting money for her then girlfriend, Alex Vause (Laura Prepon). Chapman eventually starts to do her time when her ex-girlfriend Alex ends up at the same prison together. Where their loves rekindles and they have to fight to stay together. Many events unfold. With the biggest one being the prison riot. Daya (Dascha Polanco), shoots a correctional officer in the leg and the prison began to slowly fall apart. Inmates were holding officers hostage while the riot lasted a whopping 3 days. Eventually, all came to an end with Daya holding a gun to one of the officers head. After this, many inmates received longer sentences and hell began to unfold. This drama is an intense bloodbath. Only the strong will make it through season 7.

Written by Jon Bokenkamp – A written and producer for plays and TV shows as well as The Blacklist: Redemption

Elizabeth Keen (Megan Boone) is the main character along side Raymond “Red” Reddington (James Spader). Both are American actors who have appeared in a number of other television shows. Elizabeth was born in Russia where she was given her birth name Masha Rostova. At the young age of 4, her father was shot and killed. Raymond “Red” stepped in to protect her mother from harm. Elizabeth grew up and married Tom Keen (Ryan Eggold) and they fell madly in love. A short while later, Red comes back into Elizabeth’s life as a long time criminal looking for immunity. He vowed to give up his “Blacklist” and help to hunt these criminals down. Only if, he is promised full immunity. He embarks on his journey with Elizabeth. As the seasons progress, a lot of truth about who Raymond Reddington really is comes to light. As well as the curve ball of who her husband, Tom Keen really is.

An American crime drama created by Bill Dubuque & Mark Williams

The not-so-known-of Netflix show features Jason Bateman who plays Marty Byrde. A financial planner who gets into trouble when a money laundering scheme goes south. Shortly after the show begins, Marty is forced to move his family from Chicago to the Missouri Ozarks. Where they move into the home of a dying man.. with the dying man. In the dark reality of the Ozarks (as pictured above) Marty and his wife Wendy (Laura Linney) struggle to stay afloat. All while keeping their lives as some of the top money launderers a secret from their teenage children, Charlotte (Sofia Hublitz) and Jonah (Skylar Gaertner). As the family lives out their summer in The Ozarks, Ruth Langmore (Julia Garner) stops by to play a very important role in the show. She is part of a local criminal family, and is always into trouble. She and Marty become coworkers when he buys a strip club and hires Ruth. The two become close as Marty becomes like a second father to her. The Byrde’s and Ruth soon realize that everything has to be put on the line for them to be a “normal” family once again.
